Music

The music program at Power Plus Academy is built on 4 core beliefs. Those beliefs support our passion of giving our best, which leads to success in everything we do. We want to share that passion with you and your student, the passion for music, art and life in general.

1. Start at the right age

Adults can start any instrument at any time, their success is based on how committed they are to practicing. For children, however, starting at the right age is a key element to the success of their lessons. Some people will tell you “the sooner the better” but this attitude can actually backfire. If a child is put into lessons too soon they may feel overwhelmed and frustrated which leans to them wanting to stop lessons.

  • Piano: At our school, 5 years old is the youngest age we start  private piano lessons. At this age they have begun to develop longer attention spans and can retain material with ease.
  • Guitar: 8 years old is the earliest we recommend for guitar lessons. Guitar playing requires a fair amount of pressure on the fingertips. Children under 8 generally have small hands and may find playing uncomfortable.
  • Voice: Due to the physical nature of voice lessons, such as, proper breathing techniques, development of the vocal chords and lung capacity, the younger body is generally not yet ready for the rigors of vocal technique. For this reason, 10 years old is recommended as the youngest age for private vocal lessons.

2. Insist on private lessions

Group classes work well for preschool music programs, and theory lessons. However, when actually learning how to play an instrument, private lessons are far superior. Allowing students to learn at their own pace has shown higher success rates. We believe this is because the instructor having the time and focus to work on the individual student’s strengths and weaknesses. For that lesson period, your student is the primary focus of the teacher.

3. Learn in a professional teaching environment

You need more than just a qualified instructor to learn music efficiently and successful. Having an environment that is focused on music education is also very important. In a professional environment a student cannot be distracted by the television, pets, ringing phones, siblings or anything else. With the shortened lesson time once per week, a professional environment can produce better results because the only focus is learning music.

4. Utilize at home practice time effectively

As with anything, improving in music takes practice. One of the main problems with music lessons is the drudgery of practicing and the fight between parents and students to practice every day. We have a few tricks to getting the most out of at home practice time without the headache.

  • Keep practice times short. Fifteen to thirty minutes every day is a great goal to keep consistency, focus and efficiency levels elevated. Plus, practicing for a shorter period of time can make it easier to fit practice into a busy schedule.
  • Set up a reward or incentives for students who practiced consistently. Like, creating a sticker chart and after a certain number of stickers, they earn a prize or give them the opportunity to choose a new piece of music or an accessory for their instrument after a certain amount of practice time.

We are able to offer guitar, piano and voice lessons. Because we offer one on one lessons, the schedule can vary. Complete the form below with your information, the days of the week you are available, the type of music lesson you are interested in as well as any other information you’d like us to know.
